Indian Police Service, formed in 1948 is one of the three All India Services of the Government of India. IPS cadre can be employed by both the central and the state government. Eligibility to become an IPS :

Age Limit :

To become an IPS officer, your age should be not less than 21. Applicants’ maximum age should be 32 years to take the UPSC exam. Candidates from OBC category can apply till their reach at 35 and for SC/ST candidates the upper age limit for UPSC exam is 37 years.

Educational Qualification :

Candidate must be a graduate to appear in UPSC exam in order to be an IPS. This graduation can be in any stream or from any government recognized university. If you are in the final year of your graduation then also you can apply for UPSC exam.

Attempts Limit :

UPSC has applied some attempts limits for UPSC Civil Services exam. A candidate from the non-reserved category can try 6 times only to clear the exam. For OBC candidates the number of attempts for IAS exam is 9 and for SC/ST applicants no limit attempts are set. Applicants from SC/ST category can try to clear this exam till they reach to upper age limit, 37 years.

The minimum standard for height and chest girth :

IPS is a technical service and to apply for it the candidate must have the minimum standard for height and chest girth.

1. Minimum Height Required for Male Candidates should be 165 cm.

2. Minimum Height Requirement for Female Candidates should be 150 cm.

3. SC/ST applicants will get the relaxation of 5 cm in height.

4. Chest girth when fully expanded for male candidates should be 84 cm

5. Chest girth when fully expanded for female candidates should be 79 cm.

6. Candidates should also be able to expand chest size by 5 cm.

Apart from these physical requirements, applicants’ eyesight should also be 6/6 or 6/9.
